Pomeranz Injury Is a Smart Lie

After an absolutely abysmal first eight starts of the season in which Red Sox SP Drew Pomeranz produced a 1-3 record and a whopping 6.83 ERA, he’s been sent to the 10-day disabled list with “bicep tendonitis.”

For those of you who aren’t as woke as I am, I should point out that this is absolutely a fake injury. Drew Pomeranz doesn’t have freaking bicep tendonitis; the Red Sox made that up so they could sit him down for three weeks without pissing him off. The guy needs to clear his head--he’s been terrible this season.

It’s kind of a soft move to be honest, but I’m actually in favor of the decision as a whole. When you sit a guy down like that with a made-up injury, it’s because you don’t want him to damage his his psyche more than he already may have. You want the guy to clear his mind and hit the reset button, hopefully leading a talented ballplayer back to success. And that’s exactly what Pomeranz is: a talented ballplayer who has some sort of mental block that’s keeping him from getting outs right now.

With the way the Red Sox and Yankees are so evenly matched, one player on either side could put his team over the edge and on its way to a division crown. For the Yankees, they’re likely banking on someone like Stanton to break out, who could hit 20 home runs in a month if he gets it in his head right. For the Red Sox, sitting Pomeranz for a few weeks and hoping he’ll be back to the guy he was last year could be the perfect move for an already American League-leading ball club. After all, at his peak, Pomeranz is a legitimate No. 2 pitcher--as he proved during an impressive 2017 campaign that featured 17 wins and an ERA barely over 3.0. With that guy back in the rotation, the Red Sox could get just the bump they need to become World Series favorites.
