Best of the Rest

Hey you, is your bracket already busted? Have you lost all hope for the month of March? Well, I have some good news for you in the form of an NFL offseason update.

After two official days of the 2018 league year in the books, we’ve seen a lot of action––you can find a recap of this action in Prince’s NFL Free Agency Round-Up Part I. Today, I’m going to outline a few the top remaining free agents.

  1. Tyrann Mathieu (FS): In the past two seasons, Mathieu has allowed only 7.5 yards per pass play––fourth ranked among eligible defensive backs. Mathieu, otherwise known as Honey Badger, was a First-Team All-Pro and Pro-Bowler in 2015 and is known for his physical style of play. Although his career has been riddled by injuries, he played a full 16 games last season and is still only 25 years old.

  2. Ndamukong Suh (DT): Despite his reputation as one of the dirtiest players in the NFL, Suh is an immovable force on the defensive line. He doesn’t have eye-popping numbers in terms of sacks, but his dominance often doesn’t appear on the statsheet; he requires multiple blockers to keep him in check throughout the game and thus opens up lanes for other pass-rushers. Even at age 31 and sporting a large price tag, he’s one of the biggest potential difference-makers on the market.

  3. Eric Reid (SS): Although Eric Reid believes he isn’t being signed (two days into free agency when no other safeties have signed) because of his Anthem protests, it’s likely that he will join a team soon. ProFootballFocus gave an overall grade of 81.4 to the 6’1, 214 lb safety. He finished third on the 49ers last year with 26 defensive stops and has shown ball-hawking abilities as well, with 10 career interceptions to his name.

  4. Terrelle Pryor (WR): Pryor, the 6’4 QB-turned-WR, showed spurts in 2016 on the Browns of becoming a true WR1––gathering 77 receptions, 1,007 yards, and four touchdowns. However, last year with the Redskins he regressed and only played nine games before going down with an ankle injury. This year should be a bounce-back year if he signs with a good team with a solid quarterback, and he could return to the solid deep-threat wideout that nobody expected him to become following a collegiate career as a QB. It looks like the Browns are in on Pryor again, which would make for a scary wide-receiver corps in Cleveland (if that’s even possible) with Gordon, Pryor, Landry, and Coleman.
