NFL Round-Up

There’s a lot going on in the football world, as we are now less than 100 days from kickoff. Here are some of the top stories:

Dez Bryant remains unsigned: Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is still looking for work as we near the month of June. Despite Bryant’s decline over the past couple years, I certainly did not expect him to go this long without being signed, and it really doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. It’s particularly puzzling because there are some really great fits for him out there, and it’s not as though a potential suitor would have to pony up an unreasonable amount of money to acquire his services. The most perplexing development in this saga is that Dez Bryant posted on instagram this past weekend that he was interested in playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Now, when Dez was first released by the Cowboys, I said the #1 team for him was the 49ers, so I was happy to see this post. However, it seems that San Fran is not very interested in Dez, as NFL.com reporter Tom Pelissero reported that the 49ers are “unlikely” to go after Bryant, and that they “love their receiving group as it is.” Of course, that doesn’t make any sense at all, as the 49ers have Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin as their top two receivers. While both are fine in a WR2/WR3 role, neither has the talent of Dez Bryant, even with his recent decline, so I don’t really understand why San Francisco wouldn’t want to sign him. I know that there are a lot of Dez Bryant skeptics out there these days, but I’m inclined to believe in the guy. I know he’s had some health issues and isn’t the same player he once was as a result, but let’s not forget that “washed up” players have been rehabilitated before. Just look at what the Patriots did with Randy Moss in 2007-08 after he struggled mightily for two years, just as Dez Bryant has in the past couple seasons. In fact, I compiled these stats (using Pro Football Reference) in a blog a few weeks ago on this subject, and here you go:

Randy Moss 2004-06 vs Dez Bryant 2015-17

Yards Per Game: Moss 55, Bryant 53

Receptions Per Game: Moss 3.6, Bryant 3.9

Catch %: Moss 49.86%, Bryant 49.16%

Stop sleeping on Dez. All he needs is the right team to give him a shot and reignite the flame of greatness that I believe still resides within him.

Brady Offseason Update: He’s not at OTAs. There it is. There’s your update. But wait, you ask, Where could he be? Certainly, nothing is more important to him than practicing with his teammates in preparation for the 2018-19 NFL season. So he must be doing something incredibly important...Well here’s a headline from People.com: “Tom Brady Partied in Monaco, Threw Football from Yacht, While Skipping Patriots Practice.”

Well, there ya go folks. There we have it. Tom Brady can’t be bothered to show up to work because he has to party on a yacht. Nice.

Other Notes:

  • Allen Robinson has begun practicing with the Bears for the first time after tearing his ACL in Week 1 of last season

  • After Damarious Randall offered free jerseys if the Cavs win the NBA Finals for anyone who retweeted his tweet, Joe Thomas thought it would be a good idea to make a similar pledge for a Warriors victory. Obviously, this is an incredibly bold call by Thomas to say he’ll give all these people signed Steph Curry game-worn jerseys if Golden State beats a team they can probably sweep.

  • ESPN gives the Patriots the best chance to win Super Bowl LIII, as they lead with 18%, followed by the Steelers at 14% and the Eagles at 11%.
